Just think of a single unit of transport:

  • In its decades-long life cycle, it will travel millions of kilometres. Every 32 milliseconds, its sensors will create around 25,000 datapoints. More than 10 times a Formula 1 racing car!
  • It will generate 100 TB of data. That’s the equivalent of a stack of books nearly 2,000 times as high as the Empire State Building!

The train will give advance notice when any of its components need adjustment or replacement… but never too early. Sudden peaks in demand won't overload the network.  It will stop when it detects a human or obstacle in its path... And that is only the train, the possibilities of data combined with other data sources is limitless.

Data management

One of the most relevant asset on digital mobility is DATA MANAGEMENT. From where we acquire the data, how we work it and how it is at the service of the user, makes the real difference on making useful for the business. 

At CAF we have developed a strong structure to get the data from different sources with the highest quality. Full data journey under control: from data generation to the register, its transmission, generation of data lake with an appropriate governance until reaching the data applications that gives added value to users. In terms of data sources:

  • We collect data from both our human team and our machinery throughout the entire life cycle of the equipment.
  • We do the same with everything that happens in our vehicles and their components from a single point, like a black box.
  • We monitor not only the vehicle, but everything that supports its correct function, its punctuality and its safety.
  • And we also collect data from all the agents around us that bring intelligence to mobility.

The all that is processed in a common data lake appropriately governed ensuring data quality to be able to create the data applications. We have three main data streams:

  • Real-Time: for monitoring what happens as soon as it happens.
  • Batch: For historical analysis and AI training / automatization / decision making.
  • Remote: For remote management of some digital assets from ground.

In any case, what makes the real difference is the way we put the information to work for the user via the Data Applications.

Application of the technology

We have got the data, and what now? Using our Digital Platform, CAF is committed to adding value through technology by designing applications that benefit the entire life cycle.

Our applications, which are made by the experts in the matter to obtain value, can vary with the aim of increasing our efficiency as well as increasing the availability and reliability of the fleets, making them safer and more punctual while at the same time reducing maintenance costs and energy consumption.

We use the latest Artificial Intelligence models to enrich our data as well as improving our data applications, automatizing tasks and providing a guidance on decision making.
 

Cibersecurity

Digitalization is bringing substantial benefits in Transportation operational efficiency as well as better passenger experience and comfort. It also inevitably increases the vulnerability to cyber-threats. The digital

Platform consider cybersecurity in two ways:

  • Cybersecurity norm applications, working towards compliance IEC-62443 and ISO 27001 standards.
  • We adapt to any digital circumstances of our customers or partners in order to ensure cybersecurity.
